What affects outdoor pool water temperature?
Sun is important, but it competes with evaporation, wind, the night sky, pool geometry, covers, and any scheduled heating.
Pool temperature can be forecast when a current water reading is combined with the pool's thermal mass, exposed area, equipment schedule, and the hourly weather forces that add or remove heat. It remains an estimate because shade, use, equipment performance, and weather can differ from the inputs.
Think in terms of a heat budget
An outdoor pool is continually exchanging energy. Sunlight and a heater can add heat, while evaporation often removes it. Air, walls, ground, rain, and the sky can add or remove heat depending on the conditions. The water temperature rises only when the combined balance is positive.
Sunlight: the strongest daytime input
Direct and diffuse solar radiation can deliver a large amount of energy across the water surface. The effect depends on the exposed area, the pool's solar absorptivity, cloud cover, and whether a cover is in place. Shade from trees or buildings is not currently measured, so a heavily shaded pool may warm less than the default estimate.
Evaporation, humidity, and wind
Evaporation takes substantial energy with it. The loss grows when the water is warmer than the surrounding air's vapor state, when the air is dry, and when wind replaces the moist air directly above the surface. This is why a breezy, dry night can cool an uncovered pool even when the overnight air temperature does not look especially cold.
A cover can sharply reduce this exchange. Pool Forecast applies the cover only during the schedule you enter and distinguishes a solar or bubble cover from a solid cover because they transmit different amounts of sunlight.
Pool size and exposed area
There is more water mass to warm or cool for each degree of change.
More area is available for sunlight, evaporation, convection, and radiation.
Above-ground installations expose wall area directly to outdoor conditions.
Accurate volume and surface area therefore matter more than a label such as “small” or “large.” For standard shapes, Pool Forecast derives them from dimensions and average depth. A custom pool can use direct values.
Covers, heaters, and solar collectors
Equipment changes the heat budget only when it is operating or in place. The app uses pool-local schedules, including schedules that cross midnight. Gas and electric heaters and heat pumps use their entered nominal output and bounded efficiency. Solar thermal output depends on collector area, sunlight, and the pump schedule.
The model estimates the effect of the schedule you provide. It does not decide when to run a heater, evaluate energy cost, control equipment, or replace manufacturer guidance.
What the model cannot see
- Changing shade, wind shelter, landscaping, and unusual pool finishes.
- Swimmers, fountains, waterfalls, splashing, and unexpected makeup water.
- A cover that is partly open, wet, damaged, or different from the selected type.
- Actual heater condition, plumbing losses, or heat-pump performance outside the entered information.
- Indoor air handling, spas, liquid covers, winterized pools, or freeze-protection behavior.
These limitations are why the first forecast is labeled an estimate and why a current thermometer reading remains valuable.
